French CUYABENO NATIONAL PARK
The Cuyabeno Reserve is one of the most amazing places on earth. This protected area is in the Orellana and Sucumbíos provinces and is named after the Cuyabeno River, which overflows in its midpoint creating a 14-lagoon complex and the most extensive wetlands of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest.
This primary rainforest has incredible biodiversity including monkeys, river dolphins, anacondas, monkeys, and a spectacular bird life that includes umbrella birds, hoatzins, parrakeets, toucans, parrots, and the imposing harpy eagle.
The rainforest is the home to indigenous communities such as Cofan, Siona, Secoya, and Kichwa these groups have lived here for thousands of years. The reserve is also considered one of the most culturally diverse protected areas in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
On the other hand, the water called “guarango“, the most representative of the area grows in canals and edges of the lagoons flooded by dark waters (igapos).
